Part of Wayland’s history since 1898.
Our Story
Built in 1898, The Lumberyard began as Smith Lumber & Coal — one of Wayland’s oldest and most beloved businesses. For generations, it stood at the corner of Maple and Railroad, serving the local community and welcoming travelers making their way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. In a town shaped by timber, trade, and the railroad, this property became a lasting part of Wayland’s story.
In 2017, the Shepherd family began thoughtfully restoring the historic property with a vision to preserve its character while giving it new life as a place to gather and celebrate. Much of the original lumber was carefully salvaged and repurposed throughout the space, while the exposed beams and vaulted ceilings continue to showcase the craftsmanship of another era.
Today, The Lumberyard blends timeless history with rustic elegance. From the beautifully restored building, to the private grounds, gardens, and tucked-away sitting areas, every corner of the venue was designed to honor the past while creating unforgettable moments for years to come.
Meet the Shepherd Family
The Shepherd family saw more than an old lumberyard — they saw a piece of Wayland’s history worth preserving. When restoration began in 2017, two brothers led the transformation with a shared vision and a deep respect for the building’s past.
With one brother bringing years of experience as a carpenter and the other contributing his expertise as an electrician, they approached every detail with care and craftsmanship. Together, they worked to preserve the character of the original structure while thoughtfully reimagining it as a place where new memories could be made.
